sopapillas

i’m a vegetarian because i like to be healthy….

these were awesome by the way.  the homemade chocolate sauce stays in the fridge and you could keep frying these babies up all week.  very easy.  make some.  be loved.

gideon turns the ripe old age of 7

poor little kid.  he says he would rather be 5.  growing up just keeps getting worse.  just wait until he turns thirty.  it’s a total kick in the teeth.

to compensate, we got together a nice little party in good ol’ deary idaho.  uncle reuben and daddy boy hid a treasure on the side of the mountain and we brought our friends on a hike.

the treasure included (besides fruit leather) firecrackers, bouncy balls and old army patches.  today i need to get all of gideon’s patches sewn on a shirt so he can sport them.  mighty fine.  just wait until you see his birthday hat.

the brave and the few kept going until they made it to the top.  this is not the top, it’s just where the person with the camera gave up and went home.  but gideon made it!  i guess they found the geocache on top of the mountain too, so gideon got to write his name in it.

at home we had a hot dog roast and s’mores.

grandma even went all out and got a pinata.

you can see daddy boy here going for an andes mint.  what kind of person puts andes mints in pinatas?  that’s like sacrilege.

here is jehu, also known as muscle kitty.  nick names are strange things….

and here they are playing soccer with the dog.  go beany, go!

gideon got lots of fun boy presents including a stack of old books, a magnifying glass, knives, a compass, mini-mag light, a book on tying knots, a rock tumbler and running shoes.  all very excellent.

dad put in a fire pit for the occasion.  just looking at these pictures makes me want to do it all again.

here is reuben fishing out his rocks.

he whipped up an impromptu rock tumbler once he found out that gideon liked rocks.  you’re looking at a ceiling fan, 5 casters, a piece of cord and a paint can.  genius.

except for the fact that it sounds like a runaway washing machine and you have to keep it on for 7 days.  minor details.

do you notice the row of grain elevators in the back?  yeah, there’s no place like home for the holidays.  i’m afraid my children even stayed up until midnight setting off firecrackers.

happy birthday gideon.  we love you. ♥

uncle reuben is back!

from ecuador.  i was so excited.  finally, someone who could put in my decorative pond.  after all these years.  that and i missed him.  you know, a little.

naturally, my husband could put in a pond too, if he didn’t think it was stupid.  to his credit, reuben also thought it was stupid.  which is the correct, manly thing to think.  i told him to do it anyways.

it was actually a lot of work getting the pond in and level.  the hole had to be just snug.  which is why we needed such good workers.

my mother is the one who has bought them all shovels and the wheelbarrow.  i think she has plans for them at her place someday.

although reuben does have a few more years as her indentured servant until someone marries him and takes him off her hands.  mom could probably still squeeze a decade out of that deal.

jael in her yard sale dress scrubbing off the barnacles.

reuben couldn’t get a shovel in edgewise.  as you can see this really bothered him.

fortunately i was there to supervise.  without people like me there would be no pyramids.  that’s what i’d like to think.

daddy-boy came home and was like “what the hell is this pond doing in my yard?”  he seemed to have failed to remember the numerous conversations we had about the pond.  and i must have mistook all his grunts and general disinterest in the matter as a form of consent.  slight misunderstanding.

now we have a pond.  three people think it is fabulous.

as boy pointed out, it’s not exactly the yard ornament i was hoping for.  we had cousins over the other week and they didn’t make it to my front door before clothes were flying and everyone was wet and screaming.  dirty pond allure is so much greater than kiddie pool allure.  i haven’t quite figured this out yet, but it’s true.  someday i will have a fountain and water plants.  until then i expect the yard to remain littered with people’s abandoned pants.

reuben assisting the baby in her vomiting habit.

babies are funny.

and soooo disgusting.

mmm baby.

now that all is said and done i have to keep an eye on jael.  the other day i found her pants on the floor, looked outside and saw that she had tutu-ed herself and went swimming.  “got a problem with that?”

so far, fish would never stand a chance.

smush mush

is that crying i hear?  it must be mush for breakfast, yay!  at least i like it.

seriously, it’s delish.  steel cut oats (all the difference), brown sugar, craisins, walnuts, and cream.  just letting you know what’s good for you.  *m

“gideon, put your book down….”

i’ve noticed i’ve started prefacing a lot of sentences that way.  he has a half hour of reading time in the morning and when it’s over i have to tackle him.  “that’s what bookmarks are for son!”  he’s funny to listen to because he skips periods.  his little mouth just goes and goes.  he does the same thing at mexican restaurants.

anyways, i love this picture.  jael and jehu were in bed and i left gideon sitting on the couch with the baby.  when i came back he had carried her in here and sat her in what he must have thought was a comfortable position.  she probably started fussing because when i checked back he had moved her like this:

i’m not sure he stopped reading the whole time.  he really loved this little book.  right now he is reading “buffalo bill” and “captains courageous.”  alternating.  just like his mommy does.

airstream dreams

there is something about an airstream that is absolutely enchanting.  inconvenience was never so dreamy.  i think i lived in this thing for 3 or 4 years.  and i can’t help but miss it.

we planned on upgrading to the 31 foot sovereign i had parked in my parent’s backyard but never had the money to fix it up.  i think we could have fit like three kids in there.

as is, gideon had to sleep in a basket on the floor.  here are the few pictures i have of the inside.

it was hard to let go when the time came.  but what makes it all better is that someone crazier than i was bought it and fixed it up.  and she meant business.

these here are her airstream polishing muscles.

she settled for some green marmoleum (i think) for the floor, polished the interior.

topped it off with custom cabinets.

and turned it into an espresso stand!

retro espresso.  this way i get to see my old house and get a latte every time i visit my family up north.

no one better could have had it.  i am immensely pleased.  if you want to help her out, she is neck and neck in the best of the palouse contest for “best drive-thru coffee.”  if she won it would be great publicity for her new business.  she’s had it a couple years now and has been sticking it out like she was rocky or something.  polishing an airstream makes you tough!  the thing is so shiny she can even say she fried a hole in the side of her ex-boyfriend’s car when he parked in just the right spot.  (or wrong, depending how you look at it.)  so if you have a minute, run over here and vote!

thanks*m

p.s.  she’s a winner.  go dawny, go!

it’s a race!

we had gideon run in the capitol classic children’s race this year.  it was enormous fun.  we dropped him off at the train depot in this swarming mass of abandoned children.  you don’t check them in or anything.  they have to unload over a thousand kids in fifteen minutes, so parents just toss them out of the cars as they come to a rolling stop.  i was standing up, hanging over the top of the minivan waving goodbye while marc was driving away.

it didn’t help that we ended up losing him.  which is why we didn’t get any photos.  we watched all the kids run by and never spotted him.  we followed the stragglers to the finish line and then went to our meeting spot and he wasn’t there.  we were just going to the lost child check when we saw him wondering across the crowd.  i ran and picked him up like he was a big baby and loved him most embarrassingly.  here they are for a group photo.  see if you can spot him.  i believe he is picking his nose.

afterwards the park was full of food sponsors.  here is jael with gogurt watching all the balloons.

i like to think that each one represents a crying child.

rahab played with hers most exclusively.

gideon at a crosswalk with the stormtroopers.  the other one is hiding right behind this guy (you can see his shadow).

on the way home.  only one of the balloons actually made it inside the house.  more crying ensued.

in the race results gideon came in 341st out of 614.  out of boys who were age 6 to age 14.  so hooray gideon.  it’s jehu’s turn next year!

a preview

i went out and put the first coat of paint on the picnic table today.  it’s loooovverly.  my mother rummaged into this gallon somewhere and gave it to me.  you love it?  you must.

and if you are wondering about my painting skills, i left my brush unattended for two seconds and jael dumped it in the  can and left it for dead.  i had to fish for it.  although i did bend over at one point and dip my hair in the paint, so i am not entirely blameless for the condition i am in right now.  which is rather blue and spotty.  also, i cannot think of a gallon’s worth of things to paint teal so i am all up for sharing if anybody wants some.  you do, you do!

hot off the skillet

my husband unloaded this off his truck two seconds ago.  hooray and hooray for yard sale day!

i think the room now merits some tintin, don’t you?

…and bean bags and built in cube storage.  anyways, i just had to share.  it must be the thrill that comes with reckless spending.  you should see what else i bought.

ahha!

i just grabbed that sucker.   poor kid didn’t even see it coming.  although when i had the pliers out earlier he did seem a little more suspicious….  and just think, there’s a whole mouth of them to go after that!  and then more mouths!  mommy should have been a dentist.  let’s do it again.

if he looses his baby teeth, does that mean he’s not my baby?  i think i will cry.
