new tea things

i just inherited a few of grandmother hazel’s teacups.  who’s for tea?

jael has been eagerly anticipating company.  we haven’t got to try them yet.  she was quite upset when i put them all back with no tea had.

she didn’t even get half a chance to get caffeinated.  you should see her go after green tea and iced coffee.  mmm…baby.

and hoo-hoo was feeling the injustice of it all as well.  someone needs to visit soon.

perhaps i will just have to institute a 2 o’clock tea time around here irregardless.  and start stocking biscuits.  i see nothing wrong with that.  maybe we’ll see you around.

my little sparky

gideon’s award ceremony for awana’s was last night.  we live right down the street from calvary chapel.  it’s been right handy to drop him off there wednesday nights and let him hang out with the unwashed masses without his mother.  i think he’s the only kid who shows up with his vest buttoned.  because i button it.

gideon worked really hard and breezed through his book and his extra credit book.  he is very proud of his sparky pin.  i think all in all he memorized 42 verses this year.

at first i was skeptical of a program that gives you awards for memorizing the bible.  (my dad always said that was bad.)  but i do love the accountability it provides for working through scripture and i love how it fills him up.  he’s always bursting out into very bad, loud and toneless songs such as; “jesus christ is god’s son!  jesus christ is the savior of the wooooorrrlld!  greeeeaaaaaaaaat is our loooorrrd and mighty in power!”  he sounds like a street side evangelist.  if he had any friends he would creep them out in a second.  especially with his rendition of, “if you sin just one sin, you are guilty of all!”  it’s awesome.

and here he is with who we fondly refer to as the “other gideon.”  gideon has decided that the other gideon must be his friend by merit of sharing the same name.  he’s pretty much turned stalker.  i help him out.  for instance, i saw a kid i liked on an opposing soccer team a month ago.  i talked to our coach, got the team name, looked them up on the schedule, found where they played, tracked down his parents, exchanged emails….  just be glad i’m not your mother.  or else i would button up your vest and pick your friends too.

english daisies

the boys got me a flat of perennials for mother’s day.  these were my favorite.  aren’t they just lovely?

jael’s new room

jael has her own room complete with all her toys.  the boys are jealous.  i try to explain to them that they have the whole toy room, but it is not as cozy.  they are sad.

jael on the other hand is ecstatic.  her room has been under construction for weeks, all while being used as a greenhouse on the side.  so when i kicked out the tomatoes, rolled out the rug and pulled everything together she was surprised.

she spent the afternoon buzzing back and forth between her bed and her kitchen and her tea set.  i am glad she likes it, since it was such a long time coming.  and it’s not even done (but we will overlook that).

this is the kitchen my mother found on craigslist for her birthday.  you can see in the bottom the fun food tins i’ve been collecting.  they (curious small people)  seem to like anything with lids.

and the wonderful schylling tea set was from aunt meggie.  the box of real silverware from aunt natalie.  (violence often ensues with butter knives.)

the flower table was from my mother who found it on craigslist.  it’s coated in primer right now as i still haven’t decided what to do with it.  white or a mellow acorn squash orange?

the changing table i found on craigslist for $10.  the hardest part was changing out the pulls on the sliding doors.  and then of course i had to paint everything.  (i always have to paint everything.  it’s a disease.)   the vintage embroidery my mother found at a thrift store.

my new drawer pull.  there is nothing like successfully getting your husband to install new cabinet hardware to improve your outlook on life.  ah, the satisfaction.

speaking of hardware, my mother heisted these glass knobs out of an abandoned house.  that woman is always on the sly, i tell you.  in fact, she found me this dresser at a yard sale for $7 when gideon was born.  and i found the prints hanging above it at a yard sale for $5.  which ended up setting the trajectory for the whole room.  which i hope can go boy or girl if it has to.

yay for yard sales.

and, as you might guess, this doll bunk bed also came from a yard sale.  for the shocking price of $5.  the finish is in bad shape so it needs stripped/stained or painted.  i can’t decide.  i also need to make new mattresses for it.

jael sporting her new get-up from happy green bee.  i would buy all her clothes there if i could.  plus her new minky.  custom designed for her new room, of course.  cuz i was thinking ahead.

and best of all, her lovely ikea rug that i had a friend in seattle buy for me.  she packed it to moscow, passed it on to another friend who passed it on to my mother who then drove it over to me.  and that’s how you have to roll if you ever want to buy anything from ikea.  because the jerks won’t sell anything online.  yes, just ask me what i think about that.

the princess girl herself.

her new crib from my mother-in-law.  who also bought her the matching bedding.  and the popcorn blanket crocheted by aunt becca out of some lovely lambswool.  which she actually made for gideon when he was a baby and it’s doing the rounds again.

oh yes, and the blocks on the floor are from aunt meggie too.  which ended up matching like crazy.  i love it.  (and i’m insane.  i make my kids coordinate their jammies.  that’s how i like it.)

here she is demanding to be tucked in.

oh how we love her.

but that’s mostly just because we’re related.

how ugly becomes awesome

spray paint is like magic.

okay, so to some people it’s still ugly.  but i’m telling you, they were uglier before with their smoker gold frames and red plush velvet mats.  i almost passed them by.  but i have been needing something for our naked family portraits and my yard saler’s intuition is freaky keen.  wait until you see the gold parrot candle sticks i picked up.  …okay, those were a bit questionable but this is just fun.

and if that’s not enough for you

here’s is jael hanging out next to the new nursing cover i made for a friend.  my computer was down that day so i didn’t have my “recipe”.  anyways, i ended up making the thing too short.  after being considerably miffed i settled down and added a ruffle on the bottom.  i kind of like it.

so there, hooray for mucking things up every once in a while.

oh fine

i’ll blog something.

it’s a ninja minky.  jael is indiscriminate when it comes to minkys and cried bloody murder when she found out we gave it to “that boy.”  all minkys are jael’s minkys as far as she is concerned.  but he was cute and it couldn’t be helped.  welcome to the world joshua ryan!
